Newton County Sheriff’s Office Launches Crime Center and Holiday Checkpoints to Bolster Community Safety

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has launched innovative measures—including a centralized Crime Center and expanded holiday vehicle checkpoints—to proactively reduce crime and enhance public safety in collaboration with local law enforcement.

In October 2024, Sheriff Ezell Brown announced the opening of a Crime Center in partnership with police departments in Covington, Porterdale, and Oxford. This hub now enables real-time crime data collection, analysis, and inter-agency communication, providing rapid coordinated responses to criminal activity. Sheriff Brown said the initiative “is all about teamwork and building a united front” to protect Newton County residents.

In addition, during the holiday season, the Sheriff’s Office teamed up with the Georgia State Patrol and Covington Police to conduct safety checkpoints aimed at reducing impaired driving. Officials emphasized the importance of planning and designated driving, while keeping checkpoint locations confidential to ensure deputy safety.

These efforts build on broader public-safety accomplishments by Sheriff Brown’s office, including jail programs that have halved repeat offenses and workforce initiatives that link former inmates to local employers. Together, these programs reflect a comprehensive, preventative approach—from data-driven enforcement and inter-agency coordination to rehabilitation and community engagement.
