In August 2023, tragedy struck the heart of Covington when a fire broke out during a community movie night, destroying several beloved businesses and historic buildings on the downtown square. Storefronts like Shear Bliss, New Shoez, Shelvie Jean, and The Dude Store were lost, while neighboring properties suffered extensive smoke and water damage.

Within days of the fire, the City of Covington, Newton County Chamber of Commerce, and Downtown Development Authority launched the Small Business Resiliency Fund, designed to provide immediate support for affected business owners.
