Covington Rebuilds Historic Square with Community Unity

In August 2023, tragedy struck the heart of Covington when a fire broke out during a community movie night, destroying several beloved businesses and historic buildings on the downtown square. Storefronts like Shear Bliss, New Shoez, Shelvie Jean, and The Dude Store were lost, while neighboring properties suffered extensive smoke and water damage.

But what followed was a remarkable show of Covington Square fire resilience—a community-wide commitment to recovery, heritage, and hope.

Small-Town Solidarity and Rapid Response

Within days of the fire, the City of Covington, Newton County Chamber of Commerce, and Downtown Development Authority launched the Small Business Resiliency Fund, designed to provide immediate support for affected business owners. Local residents, shop owners, and emergency personnel came together to assist with cleanup, fundraising, and morale-boosting efforts.

Fire departments from Covington and surrounding counties—more than 50 firefighters in total—responded to contain the blaze. Interim Fire Chief Joe Doss praised the public’s response, calling the outpouring of support “phenomenal” and “unreal.”

Preserving the Past While Planning for the Future

City staff, fire officials, and members of the Historic Preservation Commission worked swiftly to assess the damage and establish guidelines for safe rebuilding. These early efforts ensured that the district’s distinctive architectural character would not only be preserved—but thoughtfully revitalized.

Public-private collaboration is now underway to restore the square in a way that honors its past while preparing it for the future. Initial planning meetings, community input sessions, and creative fundraising campaigns—like branded T-shirt sales and donation drives—have set the tone for a hopeful rebuild.

A Catalyst for Long-Term Investment and Development

While the fire marked a painful chapter, the community’s response reveals Covington’s enduring strength. For the Newton County Industrial Development Authority (NCIDA), this moment reflects the foundational qualities that make Newton County a resilient and desirable place for business and investment:

  • Strong civic partnerships

  • A deeply engaged community

  • A commitment to preservation and progress

  • A unified approach to problem-solving
