Community Engagement in Environmental Initiatives Unites Residents for a Greener Newton County

Newton County is ramping up environmental stewardship through community-driven programs like neighborhood cleanups, pond maintenance, stormwater management, and recycling promotion—empowering residents to help build a healthier, more sustainable region.
Recently, community members came together for the Sandhill–Texas Alley Day cleanup event on September 14, 2024. Coordinated by the City Manager’s Office and Public Works teams, volunteers removed litter, debris, and invasive vegetation near downtown, significantly improving local visual quality and environmental health.
Public Works teams have also carried out algae treatment and pond-cleaning projects at Academy Springs Park, enhancing water quality and habitat resilience for people and wildlife. Engineering staff tackled stormwater runoff concerns near Floyd Street trails, installing drainage features that reduce erosion and improve ecological stability .
In another visible step toward environmental progress, the City introduced recycling services at Legion Field, installing blue recycling containers with free pick-up from Latham Sanitation. This initiative supports public events while promoting county-wide waste reduction.
These efforts reflect Newton County’s growing commitment to sustainability—as residents, city staff, and community groups collaborate to keep shared spaces clean, conserve water, manage stormwater, and reduce waste. By engaging in environmental initiatives, the Newton County community is modeling long-term stewardship, improving quality of life, and building a greener foundation for future growth.
